Trancendence

The photographs in this exhibition began on August 5, 2024, with the creation of Raven Returning from the North Star.

Soon afterward, something remarkable happened. New images began arriving with an energy and clarity unlike anything I had experienced in more than fifty years as an artist. I would often wake in the middle of the night with an idea, and by the end of the following day, another photograph was beginning to take shape. It was, and continues to be, the most exciting creative period of my life.

The only word I have for it is alignment.

For years I have photographed birds, water, sky, landscape, atmosphere, and the universe. During this time, those familiar elements began coming together in unexpected ways. I worked without rules, preconceived notions, or predictable outcomes, following intuition wherever it chose to lead. For much of my life I photographed what I saw. These photographs grew from what I felt.

They became an honest expression of everything I have spent a lifetime searching for—wonder, mystery, stillness, presence, and the quiet connections that exist between the visible world and the one we sense but cannot fully explain.

Preparing this exhibition required a different kind of creativity. More than sixty percent of the photographs created during this remarkable period do not appear on these walls. Some remain among my personal favorites. Yet I discovered once again that creating and curating are very different acts. A single photograph may speak beautifully on its own, but an exhibition must breathe with one voice. My hope is that these photographs now do just that in the space I had available to me.

Since making my first photograph as an artist in 1972, art through photography has been my anchor in life. For more than fifty years it has nourished me, challenged me, and continually invited me to look more deeply. I cannot imagine my life without the irresistible pull to create.

Looking back, I realize that my art did not begin when I found my voice. It began when I finally trusted it.

Along the way I have learned that making photographs has never really been about finding answers. It has been about paying attention—about trusting intuition, honoring wonder, and remaining open to surprise. Every time I have done that, the work has led me somewhere I could never have planned.

I am deeply grateful to the family, friends, mentors, collectors, and fellow travelers who have encouraged me throughout this journey. Every meaningful life is enriched by those who choose to walk beside us.
